Dan Anderson, Frank Lamadrid and Cordy Worth Win the 2103 WGAT Masters

Dan Anderson, Frank Lamadrid and Cordy Worth
Win the 2103 WGAT Masters

The 2nd Annual WGAT Masters was held at the two beautiful Marco Island Golf Courses, Hammock Bay CC and at the Rookery at Marco CC. Both Courses are the resort courses for the Marco of Marriott which is ranked the forth best golf resort in Florida by Conde Nest. But that is where the similarities stop for both courses are completely different from grass, layout and challenges.

Entering the event Oscar Raffles lead the National Order of Merit with 743 points,
and was looking to extend that lead to be one step closer to ensuring a spot on Team USA. Rafols is the first player in WGAT history to win two major events in a row with victories at the 2012 National Championship and the Match Play Championship. He will try to extent that streak to three with a WGAT Masters Victory,

Day one of the WGAT Masters was at Hammock Bay CC with wind gust exceeding 25 mph making the play difficult for the majority of the field, but for a select few they were able to take advantage of difficult conditions to separate them selves at top of the leaderboard.
Dan Anderson
Naples FL

Naples Fl resident Dan Anderson used local knowledge to record the lowest round of the day with a gross 73 net 66.  Anderson recorded 4  birdies 10 pars 3 bogies and a double to take a first round 6 stoke lead over 2011 National Champion Mark Thomas from Detroit MI who shot a gross 84 net 72.

Jose Martin
Miami Springs FL
In Flight 2 Jose Martin from Miami Fl battled with Frank Lamadrid  for the first round lead for 17 holes, but Lamadrid recorded a 9 on the 18th hole giving Martin a 3 stroke lead heading into the final round. Martin shot a gross 91 net 73 and led Lamadrid and Chris leon going into the final round. 2012 WGAT Masters Champion Shauna Federico finished day one with a net 77 four strokes back.

It was a tight race in the flight three division with nine lead changes ending in a tie with Cordy Worth From North Carolina and Don Lyons from Florida  at net 69.  Dr. CK Fernando from Hinsdale Illinois and Craig Sussillo from NY ended three strokes back at net even par.

The final round was at the Rookery which presented all new challenges for the players but the conditions where perfect and the course was susceptible to scoring.

Alan Catlin and Terry Schwartz made a run in flight one shooting as low as 5 under late on day two but finished at one under. Anderson played conservative with a 6 stroke lead and shot a net 73 to finish -1 for the event and 7 stroke victory.  Anderson said in his post round interview “I struggled today but just kept grinding out to bring it home” Anderson earned free entry into the National Championship.

Frank Lamadrid
Miami FL
Jose Martin had the Masters won, after 8 holes he had increased his lead to 6 strokes with 10 to go....it was over......then he faced the par 5 ninth hole where Jose recorded a 15 to score a 54 on the front nine. Jose was not able to bounce back by recording another 54 on the back nine to eventually finish in 8th place. Keith Varney started the day 8 strokes back and shot the low round on day two with a net 69 to climb the leaderboard to finish in 2rd place. Keith had a one stroke lead going into 18 but carded a double bogie opening the door for Frank Lamadrid.  Frank started the day in 2nd place three stokes back and started day two horribly and found himself 10 strokes off he lead after 8 holes but with Martins 15 on nine Frank found himself only 4 stokes back. “ After shooting a 51 on the front I stood on the 10th tee and said to myself that the front nine is over and the back nine in a new nine.” Lamadrid said in his post round interview. Lamadrid shot a 38 on the back to finish with a gross 89 for a net 73 to win by one. “I kept getting motivated by watching the leaderboards while I climbed to the top, when I saw Varney doubled 18 I knew if I could par the 18th I could win” Lamadrid added.

Cordey Worth
What looked to be the closest match turned out to be a blow out in flight three. Starting the final round Cordy Worth and Don Lyons were tied for first but on day two it was all Worth. Worth shoot the tournament low net round with a net 63 blowing the field away with an 11 stoke victory and would have won by 12 for not receiving a one stroke penalty for slow play.  It was a battle for 2nd place, Tom Tower from Connecticut started the final round in 5th place but with a net 68 he climbed to finish in a tie with Dr.CK Fernando.

Oscar Rafols
Miami FL
For the race to South Africa Oscar Rafols maintains his first place position with his T14 finish at the WGAT Masters. He earned 362.5 National Order of Merit giving him a total of 1115.5. Don Lyons jumped three spots from 5th to 2nd place on the NOM. Lyons earned 482.5 points at the Masters with his T6 finish for a Total of 861.50. Marvin Shavers who previously was in 2nd place dropped to 4th place with his T29 finish. Jerry Edwards maintains his 3rd place position with a T12 finish and Cordy Worth jumps 34 spots to round off the top 5 with his WGAT Masters victory and earning 600 points. Frank Lamadrid, Tom Tower, Adam Holewinski, Mark Thomas and Carlos Gonzalez make up the top 10.
