Oscar Rafols, Jerry Edwards and Jose Martin win the 2015 WAGT Masters

Oscar Rafols, Jerry Edwards and Jose Martin Win 2015 WAGT Masters.
Oscar Rafols who was a shooting star on the WAGT USA Tour back in 2012 by winning the National Championship and the Match Play Championship but due to injuries over the past few years Rafols has struggled getting back to his A game. With hard work Rafols has kicked off the 2015 Majors with a bang by winning the overall honors at this years Masters. Rafols shot a gross 74 , 77 for a net -3 to finish in a tie with Achim Triebel  who shot 75, 83 for a net -3 to force  a sudden death playoff. Achim led after day one with a net -6, just two strokes ahead of Randy Byrant who was at -4 while Oscar Rafols was in a third place at -3. 

In the final round Achim was strugled on the front nine with a quad on the par 3 8th hole opening the door for Rafols who blazed through with a gross 35 net -4 and a total net score of -7 to Achim and Randy’s -3, giving Rafols a 4 stroke lead with 9 holes to go. Randy dropped out of contention on 10 with a triple bogie while Achim pulled into the lead with net par, birdie on 10 and 11 to Oscar’s net double double. The two changed leads twice over the next seven holes with Oscar taking a one stroke lead going into 18. They limped into a tie when Oscar recorded a double bogie giving Achim an 8 foot par putt for the win.  Achim missed the putt and eventually lost in the sudden death playoff. 

In the flight 11 to 16 Mark Thomas put himself into position to win “back to back” Masters when he jumped into the lead at net event par on day one, one stroke ahead of Marvin Shavers and two strokes ahead of Jerry Edwards. However it was all Edwards who shot a net  +1 over par on day two when Shavers recorded a net +18 and Thomas finished with a +8. With this win Edwards was nick named , Mr Winner. Mr Winner is on a streak that may never be matched in history again. in less then two years Jerry has won the following:

  •  2013 National Championship
  • 2014 WAGT Open
  • 2014 WAGT Tour Championship
  • 2014 National Order of Merit Champion
  • 2014 National Player of the Year
  • 2014 3rd place finish individual Word Championship
  • 2014 2nd place finish Team World Championship

Other the flight one the most exciting finish was in flight 17 to 27 with a duel between the tours oldest member at 84 years old Dr. CK Fernando and Jose Martin. Fernando who placed in 2nd place at the Match Play Championship this year. Fernando was looking to break through for his first major of his career and had it within his grasp going into the final hole. Both were tied at net +5 but Fernando was getting two strokes to Martins one, Jose shot a 7 on the par 4 for a net 6 while Fernando shot a 9 for a net 7 giving a one stroke victory to Martin.  Martin who was 7strokes back of the leader Michael Murphy after day one, wins his first Major in his third year on tour. 3rd place honors went to John DePalma who shot the lowest single round net score of -8. John who shot a net +18 on day one fought back to place earning him valuable National Order of Merit points keeping him in 7th place and in contention to win a spot on the USA Team. 

National Order of Merit- Logan Bryant who finished Tied for 8th over all and won 278 points was enough to keep his 1st place standing on the National order of Merit with 1015 points. Randy Byant his father closed the gap from 163 points to 59 points to  remain in 2nd place with his 3rd place finish over all. Jennifer Austin moved from 3rd to 5th, Robert Karshner moved up one spot from 4th to 3rd and Michael Scarpuzzi dropped from 5th to 10th. Over all winner Oscar Rafols who won 400 points moved up 24 spots to 11th place. With John DePalma remaining in 7th place. The following 4 players jump into 4th place.

  • Jerry Edwards moves to 4th place from 11th place
  • Achim Triebel moves into 6th place from 13th place replacing Andrew Pastewski who drops to 16th place. 
  • Mark Thomas moves up 4 spots from 12th to 8th replacing Keith Varney who dropped to 13th
  • Gregory MacGraw moves into 9th place from 16th place replacing Darren Rawlinson who drops to 19th place. 

National Player of the Year- Logan Byant remains in 1st place with 3601 points just ahead of Michael Scarpuzzi and Randy Bryant. Oscar Rafols who won 1840 points jumps into 5th place less than 60 points behind 4th place member John DePalma.
